FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the Book Exchange?
The Book Exchange is a people-to-people project designed to help you find friends on the other side of the globe. It is stretching out your hand to a student in another country, and finding that they have their hand stretched right back out to you!
Have you ever read the book “Fahrenheit 451°”? This book is about a time and a place where books are forbidden because books are knowledge. 451° Fahrenheit is the temperature at which books burn, and in this time and place, instead of someone to extinguish fires, the firemen start them up by burning books. In the end of the book, every ‘outcast’, or person who decided to read a book, even though it was against the law, memorized their favorite book, so the story would not be lost. Every person became a living book. No matter what it may be, it is theirs. The Book Exchange has the same idea: It gives you a chance to share your favorite book. No matter what it is, it is yours. AND the best part is that you get to share it with someone immersed in a completely different culture than you are. You can discuss it at length by emailing a Chinese/ international student across the globe!
What is the main idea of the Book Exchange?
The main idea of the Book Exchange is to give you a chance to meet a student on the other side of the planet. If that student likes the same book you like, that student probably shares your feelings about other things, too! Think about it: That student is also stressed out about school, and perhaps even shares your taste in music, cheers for your favorite sports team, and loves the movies you love. This is your chance to meet them through your favorite book. The book you are holding in your hands now, is an original – it is special. It is worn, torn, tattered and loved by someone a thousand miles away. You would have never been able to meet that person, if it hadn’t been for the Book Exchange. This is your chance to walk over a bridge – A bridge over a cultural gap and any problems of distance, visas, costs etc. Walk that bridge and win a ‘Friend a world away’!
Where do I get a book?
The books are all kept in your respective school’s library.
At AIS Vienna, Austria, you may go to the HS (High School) Library to check out a Chinese student’s book with your id-Card. (Be sure to return it on time, as other students would also like to check it out after you). Don’t forget to email the Chinese student! This project is about you and helping you make friends in China!
At LuHe High School in Beijing, China, you may go to the LuHe Library to check out an Austrian student’s book using your library card. (Be sure to return in on time, as other students would also like to check it out after you). Don’t forget to email the Austrian student!
